Why Sawan Somvar - The Shastric Reason Monday in the Monsoon Month Is Sacred to Shiva

Every Monday during the month of Shravan - the Sawan Somvar - is held by the tradition as a particularly sacred day for Shiva worship. The reason is not seasonal. It is structural to how the Vedic calendar treats time itself.

Shravan is the monsoon month. The earth has just received rain. The agricultural cycle is mid-flow. The atmosphere has shifted from summer's intensity to monsoon's softness. In this changed atmospheric quality, the Shiv Puran holds that Shiva's presence is more accessible than at any other time of year - and Mondays specifically, because Monday is Shiva's day across the calendar.

Why Monday Specifically

Soma - the moon - is the deity associated with the Monday weekday. Shiva wears the crescent moon in his matted hair. The day of the moon is therefore Shiva's day. Across the year, every Monday carries this association. But during Shravan Somvar, the connection intensifies because the entire month is dedicated to him.

What the Shastras Say About This Compounding

The Shiv Puran is direct: a single Sawan Somvar of devotion carries the equivalent merit of multiple ordinary Mondays. The Tradition has documented across many generations that prayers offered on Sawan Somvar are received with particular attention. Vrats kept on these Mondays are reported to bring specific results that ordinary Mondays' vrats do not.

This is what makes the Sawan Rudrabhishek - the Rudrabhishek conducted on a Sawan Somvar - particularly potent.

What SiddhiStar Conducts on These Mondays

Every Sawan Somvar, SiddhiStar conducts a live rudra abhishek puja from Narwar Dham. Devotees from across India and abroad participate through the live stream, with their names in the Sankalp. The Mass Online Pooja is open from Rs. 101.

The full mahashivratri puja vidhi is not used (that is specifically for Mahashivratri night). But the lord shiva puja procedure that is used is the one specifically designed for Sawan Somvar - the abhishek, the mantras, the offerings calibrated to the season's particular potency.

Why This Matters

A devotee who has tried Shiva worship at random times and not seen results sometimes finds, on the first Sawan Somvar of their participation, that the puja lands differently. This is what the tradition says will happen - and what it has consistently observed across many generations.

Book a Rudrabhishek at your home with our “Ghar Par Puja” service or “Online Puja” service. Every SiddhiStar pandit carries the knowledge of what they are conducting.
