Why Ketaki Flower Is Never Used in Shiva Puja - The Story and What It Teaches About Truth

There is a flower that blooms in India with a fragrance so powerful it carries across a garden before you see the plant. The Ketaki flower - sometimes called Kewra - is considered one of the most beautiful-smelling flowers in the subcontinent. It is used in perfumes, in garlands, in offerings to many deities. It is never used in the puja of Shiva.

A SiddhiStar pandit trained in the Narwar tradition knows this. He knows the prohibition and the reason - a reason that comes directly from the Shiv Puran and was told live during the Mahashivratri Mahapuja at Narwar Dham. Understanding why the Ketaki flower is forbidden in Shiva puja changes how you think about every offering you ever make.

The Flower That Chose Falsehood - The Ketaki Shiva Curse Story

When Brahma was flying upward in the form of a swan, searching for the top of the Agni Stambha, a Ketaki flower was falling from above. Brahma asked it to be a false witness - to tell Vishnu that Brahma had found the top of the column. The flower agreed.

When Shiva appeared and the lie was discovered, the Ketaki flower received its consequence. You chose falsehood, Shiva said. In my puja - the puja of the one who is truth itself - you will never be offered again.

This is the answer: not aesthetic preference, not arbitrary tradition. The flower's exclusion is the permanent record of one specific moral choice it made at one specific moment.

What a Flower's Story Teaches

The Ketaki flower's prohibition is remembered every time a SiddhiStar pandit arranges the puja materials. Every flower chosen, every Bel Patra laid on the Shivalinga, every offering made - carries the knowledge of what is appropriate and what is not.

There is also something about the cost of a single compromise. The Ketaki was not inherently dishonest. But one moment of choosing convenience over truth was enough to remove it from the most sacred context forever.

Other Flowers Not Used in Shiva Puja

Beyond Ketaki, the shivling puja vidhi holds a small list of forbidden flowers: Champa (which has its own falsehood story), Kunda, and certain red flowers like Kaner in some regional traditions.

What Shiva Does Accept - Bel Patra Above All

The Bel Patra is the most beloved offering. Bel patra puja is performed in every Rudrabhishek; the leaves are placed on the Shivalinga one by one with specific mantras. Many devotees plant a bilva patra tree at home so fresh leaves are always available.

Other accepted offerings: white Datura, Aak, white lotus, Dhatura, and most white-coloured flowers.

Why SiddhiStar Pandits Learn These Stories

A pandit who knows only the mantra and not the story performs a ritual. A pandit who knows both performs a ceremony. Narwar Dham training includes both.

Book a Satyanarayan Puja and bring this depth into your home. Narwar Dham parampara. Your space. Your Sankalp.
