The Two Roots of Brahmastra Vidya: Why the Same Knowledge Has Two Lineage Claims

The Brahmastra mantra of Maa Baglamukhi has two lineage claims in the Indian tradition. Both are old. Both are legitimate. Both lead to the same essential mantra. But the parampara - the chain of teachers - diverges, and the divergence matters.

The two roots are: the Sanatkumara root and the Parashuram root.

The Sanatkumara Root

This is the lineage that the Narwar Dham tradition holds. Baglamukhi mantra descended from Sanatkumara - one of the four eternal sons of Brahma - through Narada, Vyasa, and a chain of named rishis to reach the historical present. (See Article 7 for the full account.)

This root holds the baglamukhi knowledge as a Mahavidya practice - one of the ten great wisdom paths of the Tantra. The emphasis is on ritual precision and lineage transmission.

The Parashuram Root

This is the lineage that emphasises the warrior application. Parashuram was given the Brahmastra by Shiva himself, used it in his lifetime, and gave it to specific warrior-disciples. The most famous of these was Karna - and the cautionary tale of his failure (Article 12) belongs to this root.

This root holds the baglamukhi knowledge primarily as a martial protection. The mantras are the same. The framing is different.

Why Both Are Legitimate

The tradition does not say one is right and the other wrong. Both received their knowledge from authentic divine sources. Both have produced great practitioners. Both have unbroken chains. The Narwar tradition holds the Sanatkumara root because that is the chain it inherited - but it acknowledges the Parashuram root as a parallel inheritance.

What This Means for Your Pooja
