The Five Faces of Shiva - What the Panchamukha Worship in the Rudrabhishek Is Doing

In some sequences of the rudra abhishek puja, the pandit performs an additional invocation: the Panchamukha - the worship of Shiva in his five faces. This is similar to but distinct from the Ashta Murti (which addresses Shiva in his eight cosmic forms - see Mahashivratri Article 12). The Panchamukha is the worship of Shiva's specific five faces as named in the shiv puran.
The five faces are: Sadyojata, Vamadeva, Aghora, Tatpurusha, Ishana.
Sadyojata - The Western Face
Sadyojata faces west. It is the form of Shiva associated with creation, the manifest world, the cosmos as it is experienced. To worship Sadyojata is to acknowledge Shiva's role as the principle behind the world's existence as you encounter it.
Vamadeva - The Northern Face
Vamadeva faces north. It is the form associated with preservation and beauty - the gentler aspect of Shiva, the one who sustains. The mantras to Vamadeva ask for the maintenance of what is dear.
Aghora - The Southern Face
Aghora faces south - the direction of Yama, the lord of death. This is Shiva's transformative aspect - what destroys the obstacle, what burns through the limitation. The Aghora face is fierce but its function is purification.
Tatpurusha - The Eastern Face
Tatpurusha faces east - the direction of the rising sun. This is Shiva as the supreme being, the consciousness behind all consciousness. The mantras to Tatpurusha are the ones that address Shiva at the level of pure awareness.
Ishana - The Upward Face
Ishana faces upward, toward the sky. This is Shiva as ultimate principle - beyond the four directions, beyond manifestation. The Ishana face is what the 108 names of Shiva ultimately point toward.
How This Fits Into Rudrabhishek
The rudrabhishek vidhi does not always include the full Panchamukha invocation - it depends on the scale of the ceremony. A four-prahar Mahashivratri Mahapuja typically includes it. A shorter home Rudrabhishek may not. When it is included, the puja is being conducted at the most complete level the tradition holds.
